We are going to look at the differences between solar on grid and solar off grid. It may seem obvious that one is clearly connected to the grid and one is not but there are three big differences, keep reading to find out what they are.
Number one, if the grid goes down and you've got a grid-connected solar power system, you're going to lose all your power compared to an off-grid Solar Power System which is obviously not dependent on the grid. So it will keep going, no matter what the state of the local grid.
Number two, lets look at a Off-Grid Solar Power System, for an example let's use a five-kilowatt system. An Off-Grid Solar Power System, that's five kilowatts will cost you around $50,000 give or take. A grid-connected solar power system that's five kilowatts will cost you under $10,000. So the price is a huge difference.
The third distinction between on-grid and off-grid solar is that if there isn't enough sunlight, off-grid systems will run out of power, so it relies on the size of the battery bank, but you will run out of energy if you have two or three really overcast days with little sunshine.
If that happens, you'll generally have a diesel generator to kick on to produce the electricity you require using diesel. And that's one of the reasons why it's so pricey because you need these backups. You need batteries, complex electronics to manage all of this, and careful planning is required to ensure that you don't run out of power too much or too often.
There are several distinctions between an on-grid and off-grid solar system, but the most important one is that an off-grid solar system requires its own power source. Obviously, a more dependent on the grid arrangement isn't the same. Off-grid solar systems remain incredibly costly. So consider carefully before you make your decision. Do your research, speak to solar experts, and make an informed decision that's right for you.
